Web development, video production and post-production,
and assistance for start-ups
As well as these publicly-available projects, I have also worked on some corporate videos, and multi-camera projects such as theatre productions and weddings.
Based on the short story by famous Irish writer James Plunkett, "Janey Mary" is an 18-minute short film shot in 2008. I spent 7 days on location filming the makng-of documentary, and during the post-production phase, I was the main feature's editor. The film won some awards including best internatinal short at the Hollywood Film Festival. The film was broadcast by RTE, Ireland's national public service broadcaster.
I have made a couple of band promo videos, including this one. Some of my friends were members of Cloud9, a band that played AOR music in pubs around Dublin. This video was shot in HD and put together in Final Cut, with the audio track post-production in Digital Performer.
I support a number of start up businesses, drawing on the career experience I have accumulated.
I am a non-executive director in this digital printing business, based in Dublin. I have been involved since before its foundation and I provide general business advice and assistance with financial and regulatory requirements.
I have provided general fundraising advice to a fast-growing company that has produced a ground-breaking app to help professional athletes and coaches to track performance.
I have provided general business and technology support to a small number of printing and print-finishing businesses on an ad-hoc basis.
Building interesting projects after-hours is a great way to cement new skills acquired as a full-time Rails developer, transferring skills in both directions.
While at NCI, I was unhappy with the online tools provided by the college, so when the course was completed, two classmates and I built Dev:Grads as a venue for software development graduates (and undergraduates) to share their knowledge, to get help with their problem projects, and to keep in touch.
The Irish Omnibus Company is a small private hire and scheduled service bus company operating in Dublin. The site incorporates a contact management database and a content management system. I put the site together for them in Ruby 2 and Rails 4 using Bootstrap 3. The site's engineering phase is complete, and the owners will populate content onto the site on an ongoing basis. The site is a ground-up rewrite of the codebase used in weddingbushire.ie (see below).
A branch of Irish Omnibus Company, weddingbushire.ie offers vintage bus hire for special occasions, particularly weddings. The site includes a content management system and an enquiry tracking system. The site was the basis for a new site for irishomnibuscompany.com (see above).
Ker4Print is a digital printing and design business owned by one of my friends, and the site is a full eCommerce app. It includes email inbox management (integrating with GMail), and an integrated CRM system that tracks the entire customer life cycle from initial enquiry to complete order history.
Irish Custom Guitars have three lines of business - buying new guitars and customising them with higher end electrical and mechanical parts and custom paint jobs; they sell guitar accessories online; and they operate a musical instruments shop. The site is an eCommerce presence for the first two businesses.
